Music education

Music is the heart beat of the world, and a type of art that transcends all cultural differences. People from all walks of life come together to enjoy music during concerts, festivals and works of art. On a regular basis, music is the backdrop of activity. Students hoping to learn about music will enjoy gaining information on the history, cultural effects, genres and notable contributions to music. These contributions are continuous, but going back to the beginning provides a foundation to learning music.

Music Education Degree

If you are more interested in teaching music than performing music, then an online bachelors degree in music education could be the perfect degree for you. In these programs, the curriculum places equal emphasis on music coursework and education coursework.

Music education programs equip students with key skills in conducting, music curriculum and instruction methods, and sight-singing and ear training. Aside from learning how to manage a classroom effectively, students in a music education bachelor’s program also become proficient in one or more instruments or in vocals so they can effectively provide choral or instrumental training to their future students.

you are considering earning an online music education bachelors degree, you should expect to complete some coursework and degree requirements on campus. Music education programs are seldom delivered 100% online at the undergraduate level because receiving training in an instrument or in vocal performance requires a student’s presence on campus so they can receive one-on-one instruction from their professors.

Online Music Education degree programs include courses in education theory, curriculum and instruction, and teaching, as well as courses in music theory, instruction, and performance. The curriculum is designed to produce graduates who are trained musicians as well as teachers. Common courses found in these programs include:

  • Conducting
  • Curriculum and Instruction
  • Aural Skills
  • Sight-Reading
  • Musicianship for Teaching

This is one of several specialist routes available in our BA( Music education). The degree starts by developing your understanding of the world we live in through a variety of perspectives, periods and subjects – including art history, classical studies, creative writing, English language, English literature, history, modern languages, music, philosophy and religious studies. You'll then take at least two specialist music modules. Following on from exploring the materials of music and employing them in song writing, you can choose to study further music modules. One investigates how music relates to social contexts, historically and in the present day, and one focuses on developing practical musical skills and collaborative music-making through sustained critical reflection. You'll work with a wide range of musical styles and develop skills in analyzing, creating and writing about music.

Alongside your study of music, you can choose to study a second specialism from the subjects. This will entitle you to include both subjects in the name of your degree, or complete your degree with modules chosen from a wide range of options. (Master degree also available in same field)

Key features of the course:

  • Specialize in music within a broad and flexible arts and humanities degree
  • Develop a range of skills that will be valuable in the workplace and to further study
  • Explore a wide range of musical styles and practices
  • Select a second specialism to complement and enhance your study of music
